Prerequisites for every course
Every course below assumes you are working towards the corresponding MCA certificate of competency. Check the list for your ticket — if an item is missing, the guidance articles explain how to secure it before your oral.
STCW II/2 & II/3
Master Code Vessels <200 GT and OOW (Y) <500 GT Near Coastal CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility for Master 200 or OOW 500, or nearing application
- Required sea service and STCW basic safety training
- Yachtmaster offshore certificate (for the commercial route)
STCW II/1 (3000 GT)
OOW (Y) <3000 GT Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for OOW 3000 GT, or nearing application
- Completed sea service for the tonnage-limited route
- STCW basic safety training
STCW II/3
Master (Y) <500 GT Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for Master <500 GT near-coastal
- OOW 500 or equivalent certificate plus required sea service
- STCW basic safety training and medical fitness certificate
STCW II/2 (3000 GT)
Master (Y) <3000 GT Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for Master 3000 GT
- OOW certificate plus required watchkeeping sea service
- STCW advanced training and medical fitness certificate

OOW Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for OOW Unlimited, or nearing application
- Completed sea service and STCW basic safety training
- Approved watchkeeping simulator course (or booked)

Chief Mate Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for Chief Mate Unlimited
- OOW Unlimited certificate plus required sea service
- STCW advanced training and medical fitness certificate

Master Unlimited CoC
- MCA Notice of Eligibility (NOE) for Master Unlimited
- Chief Mate Unlimited certificate plus required sea service
- STCW advanced training and medical fitness certificate

- Deck officer certificate of competency (any level)
- Vessel engaged in or planned for live animal carriage
