Passing the oral is the final academic step, but the certificate itself follows a separate application. This guide covers the post-exam paperwork, fees and timelines for your CoC.
What the examiner gives you
A pass at the oral examination is recorded by the MCA against your candidate record. Depending on the delivery format you may receive an interim statement or a pass slip on the day. This is not your certificate, but it matters: some employers will accept it as evidence of a pass while your certificate is processed.
If your certificate depends on further paperwork — a training record book completion, an medical renewal, a flag-state endorsement — the examiner or the certification team will say so on the day. Note it down before you leave the call.
The CoC application
The certificate of competency application goes to the MCA certification team with the application form, the fee, your pass record and any outstanding documents. Processing times vary by certificate volume and time of year; apply promptly, because your employer's next crew change may depend on it.
Check your certificate carefully when it arrives. Name spelling, certificate code, tonnage and mode limitations, and endorsement dates are all worth a minute of scrutiny. Errors are fixable but slow to fix.
Working internationally
If you will serve under a flag other than the United Kingdom, your employer will usually guide you through the flag-state endorsement or recognition endorsement process. The UK CoC is the foundation; the endorsement sits on top of it and is a matter between your employer, the flag state and you.
Keep digital copies of everything — NOE, pass record, certificate, medical — somewhere you can reach from a ship. Document requests at port state control inspections are rarely convenient.
